“Internet Will Stay ON!” – UCC Calms Election Shutdown Fears as Starlink Set to Launch in Uganda

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has moved swiftly to reassure Ugandans that there are no plans to switch off the internet during the upcoming elections, easing widespread public anxiety fueled by memories of past election-related blackouts.

Speaking to the media on Monday morning, UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo firmly dismissed speculation that the government intends to disrupt internet services as the country heads into the election period.

“There has been a lot of speculation and fear among the public, but we want to assure you that so far, there is no indication that the internet will be switched off,” Nyombi said.

“If such a decision is ever taken, we shall return to this same podium, brief you, and clearly explain why.”

Nyombi emphasized that UCC is not guided by rumors but by its mandate to ensure stable, fast, and accessible internet connectivity nationwide. He noted that Uganda has made significant strides in digital infrastructure over the years.

According to UCC, Uganda currently enjoys about 70 percent 4G coverage, while 5G internet is already active in Kampala, marking a major milestone in the country’s digital transformation.

“The internet is on, it is available, and people are using it,” Nyombi said, adding that expanding broadband access remains a top priority for the commission.

In what comes as exciting news to many, Nyombi also confirmed that Starlink satellite internet is expected to officially launch in Uganda this week, in partnership with Airtel Uganda. The service is anticipated to revolutionize internet access, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas.

“Starlink is coming, and we believe we shall be launching this week. This will allow people to get internet signals anywhere in the country,” he revealed.

The UCC assurance comes at a critical time when the internet plays a central role in business, communication, digital content creation, and political participation. With the painful memories of the 2016 and 2021 election internet shutdowns still fresh, Nyombi Thembo’s remarks are expected to bring relief to citizens and the business community alike.

For now, Ugandans can stay connected—and optimistic—as the country continues to strengthen its digital backbone ahead of the elections.
